We can do better. We have to do better. : A prayer for Orlando

We can do better.

We have to do better.

Events like the mass murder of innocent lives at Pulse in Orlando should serve as a reminder that humanity is important and valuable and fractured and has so far to go still. This should not be the way things are, yet we’re mourning again. Shifting blame again. Demonizing and theorizing and tweeting again. So long as this becomes about us versus them we will not move forward. We have to go back to square one. If today you find yourself more generous, more patient with those you normally find no patience for, more empathetic with someone not like you…. If you, today, found yourself going out of your way to be kind, to recognize a different perspective, to listen more than you spoke… If you resisted violence, embraced grace, and stood up against injustice instead of just talking about it… KEEP. DOING. THAT. Every day. An event like this should not be the reason we start treating people like they deserve our kindness and honor and love. We have to be for one another. We have to understand that we are fundamentally and radically loved and we need to recognize the image of God in the other, no matter how much we may disagree. There’s a better way.

We can do better.

We have to do better.
